Flood Vulnerability Assessment of Communities in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

Floods are natural events, however, due to various anthropogenic activities coupled with climate change, flooding tends be both human-induced and events. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques can spatially process different physical-environmental parameters in flood risk assessment the present study determine extent of vulnerability among communities Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. From analysis, spatial 932.26 km2 (13.48%) showed low level while a 3411.37 (49.33%) 2572.09 (37.19%) indicated moderate high levels respectively. At Local Government Areas (LGAs) level, covers 932.27 which represented 13.48% entire LGAs medium 49.33% state 37.19% state. The outcome further revealed that Two (2) found within vulnerability, nineteen (19) ten (10) vulnerability. community analysis 795 state, 138 represent 17.36% have hazards, 429 at 53.96% 228 28.68% level. generated maps identified zones useful all steps disaster management (prevention, mitigation, preparedness, operations, relief recovery) should considered during initial planning.
